Background
The award is presented annually by beneficiaries of a trust fund originally administered by Fleet Bank of Atlantic City, NJ. Currently, Bank of America, N.A., in Providence, Rhode Island, serves as the Trustee under the Will of Thomas G. Sheen.In 1938, Thomas G. Sheen, a tailor, clothier, and real estate professional in Atlantic City, created this philanthropic legacy to honor doctors who have made outstanding contributions to mankind through medicine and medical research. The legacy was inspired by his affection for his brother, Dr. Rodman E. Sheen, a radiologist and pioneer in the medical use of Roentgen rays who was injured during his research.
Purpose
"To further the study of medicine and the science of medicine and to compensate an outstanding Doctor of Medical Science in the United States each year."- A local New Jersey committee known as the Sheen Advisory Committee makes the final selection
- The committee is comprised of physicians from southern New Jersey, with half surgeons and half from other medical specialties
- The ACS Honors Committee submits three nominees in order of preference
- Nominations are also received from Sheen Advisory Committee members and the American Medical Association
- The recipient is featured as a speaker at the annual American College of Surgeons New Jersey Chapter meeting
Selection Process
- Be on the frontiers of medical science doing work with great promise
- Be currently involved in teaching and research in medicine
- Not be retired or semi-retired
