Overview

Founded in 1887, the Newberry is one of Chicago’s most historic cultural institutions. Curious people from all over visit to research topics of interest, discover their family history, take classes, or learn something new and unexpected. Our collections, programs, and exhibitions are a portal to more than six centuries of human history, from the 15th century to the present. The Newberry welcomes anyone who is eager to learn about who we are, where we came from, and where we are going. Our community of learning includes historians, genealogists, visual and performing artists, writers, graphic designers, teachers, students, and many, many others. Long-Term Fellowships-Newberry Consortium in American Indian and Indigenous Studies (NCAIS) Faculty Fellowship Newberry fellowships give researchers the time, space, and community required to pursue innovative and ground-breaking projects. Fellows advance scholarship in various fields, develop new interpretations, and expand our understanding of the past. Researchers with long-term fellowships spend four to nine months immersed in the Newberry collection and in our community of learning. While pursuing significant works of scholarship, they make discoveries, present works in progress, and take their projects to the next level. The Newberry Consortium in American Indian and Indigenous Studies (NCAIS) Faculty Fellowship is intended to support faculty members from institutions participating in the Newberry Consortium in American Indian and Indigenous Studies. Preference will be given to scholars at an early stage of their career who are working on a project in American Indian and Indigenous Studies. Fellows can be in continuous or intermittent residence at the Newberry or complete their fellowships entirely offsite, conducting research in existing digital collections or the collections of other institutions. Fellowship recipients are required to be in residence at the Newberry the week of the annual NCAIS Graduate Student Conference, which is held on the second weekend of February each year. The fellow is expected to attend and engage with students as a mentor at the conference, as well as work with McNickle Center Staff prior to the conference to shape the event's keynote address.
