The Coastal Program: Capacity Grants- Technology Upgrades

The Coastal Program's Capacity Grants for Technology Upgrades support local and Tribal governments in Minnesota to enhance coastal management through technology. Grants up to $4,500 can be used for equipment, software, and training aimed at improving water quality, habitat restoration, and community resilience. Eligible applicants must match 10% of the funds. Priority will be given to rural or Tribal communities with limited funding, ensuring equitable access to resources for sustainable coastal development.

NOTE: Coastal Program staff will review requests at staff meetings, a minimum of twice a month. You may submit your request at any time. We will award eligible requests, as funds exist.
Minnesota’s Lake Superior Coastal Program at the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is offering small, short-term capacity grants to eligible partners to improve or manage coastal resources and development.
“Coastal management” refers to the decisions and actions taken to keep the natural environment, built environment, quality of life, and economic prosperity of coastal areas in balance. It includes:
Protecting or restoring coastal habitatsIncreasing communities’ abilities to improve resilience to coastal hazardsPlanning for or managing public access to the coastIncreasing communities’ abilities to implement sustainable coastal management practices, revitalize their ports and waterfronts and improve water qualityImproving understanding of policies and regulations
Technology Upgrades Capacity Grants
Applicants may purchase or contract for technology to improve coastal management. This includes supplies and equipment, as well as applications and programs. Applicants are encouraged to consider cloud-based programs such as ArcGIS Online, as well as upgrades to GIS equipment and/or computer-based field collection tools.
Maximum request for Technology Upgrades is $4,500. The funds are reimbursement only; you must front the expenses and submit documentation to us for payment.
