Overview

TAA Grants to Accredited Organizations

Overview: The Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance awards grants to TAA-accredited Thoroughbred aftercare organizations. Since inception in 2012, the TAA has awarded more than $17.2 million in grants to accredited organizations.

Geographic Scope: North America (United States and Canada)

Focus Areas:

  • Equine care (earmarked specifically for equine care)

  • Retraining of Thoroughbreds into other disciplines

  • Rehoming of retired Thoroughbreds

  • Retirement of racehorses
  • Eligible Organizations:

  • Must hold current TAA accreditation

  • Must be 501(c)(3) federal not-for-profit (U.S.) or registered charity under Income Tax Act (Canada)

  • Must have been in operation for at least 3 years

  • Must currently exclusively own and provide care for minimum 5 registered Thoroughbreds, OR care for 3-4 Thoroughbreds and have cared for at least 10 over previous 12 months

  • Must have written euthanasia policy consistent with American Association of Equine Practitioners

  • Must not have adverse legal proceedings

  • Must undergo thorough application and inspection process

  • Must meet TAA Code of Standards covering: operations, education, horse health care management, facility standards and services, adoption policies and protocols

  • Must undergo facility inspections of all facilities housing Thoroughbreds

  • Must maintain ongoing updates and re-inspections as condition of accreditation

  • How to Apply

    Application Process

    1. Eligibility Check: Ensure organization meets all five minimum requirements (see overview)
    2. Accreditation Application: Complete TAA accreditation application on ThoroughbredAftercare.org/Accreditation using OpenWater platform
    3. Application Review: TAA staff reviews application for compliance with five key areas:
    - Operations
    - Education
    - Horse health care management
    - Facility standards and services
    - Adoption policies and protocols
    4. Site Inspections: Organizations passing application review are subject to TAA site inspections of all facilities housing Thoroughbreds
    5. Accreditation Decision: Accreditation status determined after complete review
    6. Grant Eligibility: Upon accreditation, organization becomes eligible to receive grants (amounts vary)

      Deadline

    • Accreditation applications typically due April 1 at 6 p.m. ET
    • Organizations with accreditation expiring in the current year must reapply to remain accredited
