Summer Grants

Organization: Hildebrand Project

Purpose: Enable a period of focused engagement with Hildebrandian and personalist ideas resulting in new writing destined for publication.

Award Amount: $3,000 per grant (applicants may request less)

Number of Awards: Up to 8 grants awarded annually

    Focus Areas

  • Writing projects on any theme in the thought of Dietrich von Hildebrand
  • Christian personalism, including work of Karol Wojtyła, Max Scheler, Edith Stein, Jacques Maritain, or related thinkers
  • Eligible project types: MA thesis, PhD dissertation, scholarly article, book chapter

    Eligibility

  • Applicants: Graduate students and faculty in any field
  • Geographic Scope: International
  • Project Timing: Work conducted May-September or through end of calendar year
  • Requirements: Project must be new or significantly advanced by the grant; projects already reasonably likely to be completed without additional support are not eligible

    What Funding Supports

  • Replacing income from summer teaching
  • Travel for research or to present at/attend conferences
  • Other expenses that meaningfully enable the work

    Additional Benefits

  • Publication Incentive: $250 for work published in peer-reviewed scholarly journal within 18 months of September 30
  • Publication Incentive: $100 for work published in non-peer-reviewed outlets (e.g., First Things, Plough, Church Life Journal) within 12 months

How to Apply

Application Process

1. Submit the following materials to info@hildebrandproject.org:
- 1-3 page proposal explaining the envisioned project, its philosophical import, and what the applicant hopes to achieve during the grant period
- Short proposed bibliography
- Academic CV or resume

2. Proposal Requirements:
- Clearly explain how the funding will meaningfully enable your work
- Examples of enabling uses: replacing summer teaching income, supporting research travel, enabling conference attendance

3. Review and Notification:
- Applications reviewed by committee of scholars in Christian personalism
- All award decisions communicated by specified deadline
- All decisions are final

4. Post-Award Requirements:
- Grantees must submit report on fruits of their work by January 2023
- To claim publication incentive, submit copy of published work or brief note from journal editor confirming imminent publication
