Student Organization Funding Committee (SOFC)

Geographic Scope: University of Michigan, Ann Arbor

Central Student Government provides funding for registered student organizations at the University of Michigan through the Student Organization Funding Committee (SOFC). The committee operates on a rolling funding wave system throughout the academic year.

Focus Areas

Based on student input, CSG prioritizes funding for:

• Capital goods (items for long-term organization use) - 85% of students indicated this is important
• Space reservations and facilities (room reservations, fields for practice)
• Travel expenses - identified as a key activity for many organizations
• Social events - recognized as valuable for community building and professional development
• Events and programming that benefit the student community

Funding Considerations

The committee considers the following when making decisions:

• Number of students affected (80%+ priority)
• Organization's financial need (80%+ priority)
• Impact on the community (80%+ priority)
• Accessibility and DEI alignment - organizations that support underrepresented identities and DEI initiatives are encouraged
• Lower income students - consideration of how funding serves economically disadvantaged students

What SOFC Does NOT Fund

• Professional services with lower priority (photography, music, web design) - ~50% of students indicated lower importance
• Clothing and prizes - not prioritized by student body

2. Identify Funding Wave - Applications operate on a rolling wave system with multiple funding deadlines throughout the academic year
3. Prepare Application - Submit through the online portal at csg.umich.edu/sofc
4. Office Hours - Sign up for office hours to discuss your application and funding needs with SOFC members
5. Submit Application - Meet the deadline for your chosen funding wave
