Stephen J. White Prize The Stephen J. White Prize is established with the American Philosophical Association in honor of the late Dr. Stephen J. White, Associate Professor of Philosophy at Northwestern University. The prize is awarded biennially to the best published paper by a junior philosopher that engages directly with Professor White’s work or with themes that were central to his thinking. These themes include but are not limited to the following: Issues of moral responsibility, in particular what we should take responsibility for and to what extent we are especially responsible for our own lives;Issues of practical reasoning, in particular whether and how predictions about how we or others are likely to act should figure in our thinking about what to do;Issues about shared reasoning and mutual answerability;The relation between a group’s obligations (e.g., our collective obligation to address and mitigate climate change) and the individual obligations of the group’s members Award The winner of the White Prize receives a monetary award of $1,000. The Society for Philosophy of Agency has agreed to organize a prize symposium at an APA divisional meeting for each winner as one of the SPA’s affiliated group sessions. Frequency: Every other year

Eligibility is restricted to APA members who are no more than seven years past the receipt of their PhD by the submission deadline.Submissions, which may be journal articles or book chapters, must have been first published within the two years preceding the submission deadline. They may be submitted by the author or nominated by a third party. You must be a member of this organization to apply for this award - become a member.

Ineligibility

Currently serving members of the Committee on Lectures, Publications, and Research are also ineligible for the Prize.Self-nominations are permitted.
