Overview

Stein-Arnold Exploration Fund Grant The Fund was established according to the terms of the Will of Sir Aurel Stein, FBA, to commemorate his friendship with Sir Thomas Arnold, FBA, for 'the encouragement of research on the antiquities or historical geography or early history or arts of those parts of Asia which come within the sphere of the ancient civilisations of India, China, and Iran, including Central Asia, or of one or more of these and so that special consideration shall be paid, if possible, to research of this character bearing upon the territories comprised in the present Kingdom of Afghanistan including the region of ancient Bactria and in the north-western frontier region of India'. Research should be "so far as possible by means of exploratory work".  Funds are limited and normally grants will not exceed around £3,500, but in exceptional circumstances grants may be considered up to £5,000.

Applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria: Grants are available for advanced research, at postdoctoral or equivalent level, in the study of the antiquities or historical geography or early history or arts of those parts of Asia which come within the sphere of the ancient civilizations of India, China, and Iran, including Central Asia.Applicants must be either British or Hungarian subjects. Applicants should be of postdoctoral status or have equivalent experience. Awards will not be made retrospectively: this means that the work for which support is requested must not have commenced before the award is announced. Please note the earliest point at which research can commence.Duration of award:24 months
