Social Justice Award

Overview: The JHBC Office of Academic Equity (OAE) Social Justice Award recognizes a student who has demonstrated exceptional commitment to advancing equity, inclusion, and social justice within the campus community or beyond. Selected by JHBC OAE Advocates based on the quality of their essay.

Geographic Scope: CSUSB, California

Focus Areas:

  • Commitment to social justice and equity

  • Advancing Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) initiatives

  • Community engagement and social change

  • Addressing marginalization and injustice
  • Eligibility:

  • Must be enrolled as a full-time student with a declared major and/or minor within the JHBC College

  • Must be in good academic standing for the current academic year

  • Students on academic probation are ineligible

  • Previous recipients of any JHBC OAE Awards are not eligible to apply
  • Award Details:

  • $500 cash award (part of Student Opportunity Fund)

  • Recipients vary annually based on applications and available funding

  • Three Advocates review and rank all submitted essays

  • Students notified of application status within three weeks after deadline
  • Post-Award Requirements:
    Award recipients must:

  • Attend the next JHBC "ShEconomy" event (2-hour event)

  • Attend one other JHBC OAE Event (1-hour minimum per event)

  • Authorize JHBC OAE to publish essay or excerpts with their picture on website

  • Submit a quote on the importance of academic equity for publication with their picture

    Essay Requirements

    Length: 500-700 words

    Prompt: Reflect on your experiences with social justice and how they have helped advance DEI initiatives

    Required Content - Address at least THREE of the following points:
    1. What the social justice framework means to you and how it has shaped your understanding of DEI
    2. A specific example of your engagement in social justice work—what you did and what resulted
    3. How social justice work can address marginalization and injustice
    4. Your future goals related to social justice and DEI-B (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging) work

    Format Requirements:

  • Well-organized and clearly written

  • Strong introduction, body paragraphs, and conclusion

  • No specific formatting requirements
    • Essay Evaluation Criteria

      Content (65%)
    • Clearly and concisely demonstrates understanding of the prompt
    • Addresses the questions above
    • Contains original thought
    • Includes supporting arguments that demonstrate critical thinking

    Presentation (35%)

  • Quality of writing, including style, clarity, flow, and vocabulary

  • Organization, including structure, paragraphing, introduction, and conclusion

  • Conventions, including syntax, grammar, spelling, and punctuation
