Overview

Sky Alland Scholarship

Overview: A highly competitive full scholarship established over 20 years ago to commemorate J. Schuyler ("Sky") Alland, a 1979 graduate of McIntire School of Commerce who was killed in 1992.

Award Amount: Value of full in-state tuition and fees plus $10,000 stipend for room, board, and educational costs

Geographic Scope: University of Virginia

Eligible Applicants:

  • Rising fourth-year (senior) students at University of Virginia

  • All majors and disciplines
  • Selection Criteria: Award honors students who demonstrate:

  • Leadership: Active involvement in campus and community leadership

  • Achievement: Academic and extracurricular excellence

  • Enterprising spirit: Initiative, innovation, and drive

  • Humility: Modest despite accomplishments

  • Devotion to the University: Commitment to U.Va. community
  • Selection Process:

  • Nomination-based (students nominated by community members)

  • Review committee of 9 student leaders evaluates nominations

  • More than 40 nominations reviewed annually

  • Narrowed to 6 finalists

  • Finalists attend dinner with University leadership and selection committee

  • Finalists interviewed for final award determination

  • 1979 graduate of McIntire School of Commerce

  • Developed successful company around customer satisfaction surveys for automobile dealerships

  • Killed in 1992 during carjacking in Washington, D.C. area

  • Scholarship established by friends and fellow alumni in his memory
  • Recognition: One of the highest awards a rising fourth-year student can earn at University of Virginia

    How to Apply

    Application Process

    1. Nomination: Students are nominated by faculty, staff, and peers who believe they embody the ideals of Sky Alland
    2. Review: Committee of 9 student leaders reviews all nominations (typically 40+ per year)
    3. Finalist Selection: 6 finalists selected to advance
    4. Dinner Event: Finalists invited to dinner with University leadership and selection committee
    5. Interview: Finalists interviewed the following day by selection committee
    6. Award Announcement: Winner announced
