Senior Fire Safe Program

Overview: Fire safety inspection and alarm installation program for senior citizens living in neighborhoods most vulnerable to fire, funded by FEMA Assistance to Firefighters Fire Prevention and Safety Grant.

Funding Source: $685,000 from FEMA Assistance to Firefighters Fire Prevention and Safety Grant, secured by U.S. Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand

Geographic Scope: New York City communities with highest fire risk

Target Communities:

  • Manhattan: CB 11 (East Harlem), CB 12 (Washington Heights, Inwood)

  • Bronx: CB 5 (South Bronx), CB 10 (East Bronx)

  • Brooklyn: CB 12 (Central Brooklyn), CB 13 (Coney Island, Brighton Beach, Bensonhurst, Gravesend, Seagate)

  • Queens: CB 4 (Corona, Corona Heights, Elmhurst, Newtown), CB 7 (Flushing, Bay Terrace, College Point, Whitestone, Malba, Beechhurst, Queensboro Hill, Willets Point)

  • Staten Island: CB 3 (Hurricane Sandy-affected area)
  • Eligible Participants:

  • Senior citizens living in identified vulnerable neighborhoods

  • Members of deaf and hard of hearing community

  • People with disabilities who are homebound
  • Services Provided:

  • Free, in-home fire safety reviews

  • Installation of combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms with 10-year batteries

  • Group presentations on fire safety education

  • Reach to thousands of New Yorkers
  • Background:

  • Continuation of pilot program following Hurricane Sandy

  • Data: 25 New Yorkers died in fires with no working smoke alarms in prior year; 75% of fatal fires have no working smoke alarm

  • FDNY responded to nearly 22,000 cardiac arrest incidents (2013)

  • Must reside in one of the identified Community Boards
