Program Name

SBIRT - Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment

Purpose

Screening patients for drug and alcohol problems in primary care clinics and providing interventions to connect at-risk patients with treatment.

    Focus Areas

  • Patient Screening: Screen for signs of substance abuse and drug abuse in primary care settings
  • Brief Intervention: 15-minute motivational conversations about treatment options
  • Treatment Referral: Connect identified at-risk patients with appropriate treatment
  • Integrated Approach: Incorporate screening into fabric of primary care (similar to treating diabetes and hypertension)
  • Staff Training: Train clinic employees to screen, counsel, and refer patients

Implementation Details

Expected Impact: Screen 8,750 people in first year

Implementation Sites: Five city health clinics:

  • Henry J. Austin Health Center (3 locations)

  • Capital Health clinics

  • St. Francis Medical Center clinics
  • Target Population: Patients identified as being at risk for substance abuse
