Screening patients for drug and alcohol problems in primary care clinics and providing interventions to connect at-risk patients with treatment.- Patient Screening: Screen for signs of substance abuse and drug abuse in primary care settings
- Brief Intervention: 15-minute motivational conversations about treatment options
- Treatment Referral: Connect identified at-risk patients with appropriate treatment
- Integrated Approach: Incorporate screening into fabric of primary care (similar to treating diabetes and hypertension)
- Staff Training: Train clinic employees to screen, counsel, and refer patients
