Society of Health and Physical Educators SHAPE America – Society of Health and Physical Educators serves as the voice for 200,000+ health and physical education professionals across the United States. The organization’s extensive community includes a diverse membership of health and physical educators, as well as advocates, supporters, and 50+ state affiliate organizations. Since its founding in 1885, the organization has defined excellence in school-based health education and physical education. For decades, SHAPE America’s National Physical Education Standards have served as the foundation for well-designed physical education programs across the country, just as the SHAPE America National Health Education Standards serve as the foundation for effective skills-based health education. Together, these national standards provide a comprehensive framework for educators to deliver high-quality instruction and make a positive difference in the health and well-being of every preK-12 student. Our Mission: To advance professional practice and promote research related to health and physical education, physical activity, dance and sport. Ruth Abernathy Presidential Scholarship: Undergraduate Since 1995, SHAPE America has awarded scholarships to outstanding undergraduate and graduate student members majoring in the field of health, physical education, recreation or dance. The Ruth Abernathy Presidential Scholarship, developed by the past presidents of SHAPE America to honor deserving students, is awarded to three undergraduate students and two graduate students in January of each year. All scholarships are presented at the SHAPE America National Convention & Expo held in the spring. In addition to the financial award, recipients also receive a complimentary three-year SHAPE America membership. Eligible undergraduate applicants are selected based on scholastic proficiency; evidence of leadership; school, community, professional activity/servic; and character attributes.

Eligibility

You can learn more about this opportunity by visiting the funder's website. Criteria for Undergraduate Applicants:Applicant must be a current member of SHAPE America. Undergraduate students may join at the time of application.Applicant must be majoring in the field of health, physical education, recreation or dance.Applicant must have college junior or senior class standing at a baccalaureate‐granting college/university (completed a minimum of 60 semester/90 quarter units of college courses).Applicant must have a minimum grade point average of 3.5 overall on a 4.0 grade point scale. GPA scores from all institutions attended in pursuit of applicant’s current degree must be factored into the overall GPA. Applicant must be a first time Ruth Abernathy Presidential Scholarship recipient. You must be a member of this organization to apply for this award - become a member.

Ineligibility

Previous recipients of SHAPE America’s National Presidential Scholarship are ineligible.
