Recreational Trails Program (Motorized and Non-Motorized Portions) - Safety and Environmental Education Grant

The Recreational Trails Program (RTP) offers funding for both motorized and non-motorized trail projects, promoting safe and environmentally responsible recreational use. With up to $10,000 available per project, eligible applicants include government entities and non-profits. Projects can range from trailhead kiosks to educational programs, ensuring diverse community engagement. This initiative, reauthorized through the bipartisan infrastructure law, aims to enhance access to and the quality of recreational trails across states.

Recreational Trails Program (Motorized and Non-Motorized Portions)
The Recreational Trails Program (RTP) is a federal-aid assistance program established by Congress in 1991 to help states develop and maintain recreational trails. The program is funded by a portion of the federal motor fuel taxes paid on fuel used for non-highway recreational purposes, such as in ATVs, snowmobiles, and other off-road vehicles. These funds are returned to the states through the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to provide grants for a wide variety of trail projects. The RTP is a model of "users-pay, users-benefit," supporting the maintenance of existing trails, construction of new trails, and the development of trail-related facilities for both motorized and non-motorized recreation.

Eligibility

Eligible Applicants: Federal, State, Local, County, and Tribal Governments and Non-Profits are eligible to apply.Eligible Projects: Trail construction/maintenance, trail facilities (trailheads, restrooms, parking), and trail education.
