Rachel Corrie Memorial Scholarship

Geographic Scope: The Evergreen State College, Olympia, WA

Program Duration: One-year scholarship for undergraduate students at all class levels

Focus Areas:

  • Peace and justice efforts around the world

  • Middle East studies (valued but not required)

  • Human rights and social justice promotion

  • Community activism, scholarly analysis, and/or political advocacy

  • Areas of interest include: peace, justice and conflict resolution studies; international relations; Arab culture and Arabic language; US policy in the Middle East
  • Eligibility:

  • Must be an undergraduate student at The Evergreen State College

  • Must demonstrate commitment to gaining a better understanding of peace and justice efforts

  • Must show how studies will be used to promote human rights and social justice through community activism, scholarly analysis, and/or political advocacy
  • Selection Process:

  • Committee of four reviewers: 1 RCF board member, 1 Evergreen faculty member, 1 community member, 1 Rachel Corrie family member

  • Each committee member independently reviews all applications thoroughly

  • Decision made by consensus based on stated requirements

    Application Requirements

    Required Materials:

    1. Letter of Application (up to 2 pages)
    - Explain your qualifications
    - Explain why you wish to be considered for the scholarship
    - Include a short description of your intended studies
    - Explain how you plan to incorporate studies into community and/or international context

    2. Sample of Work (up to 5 pages)
    - Analytical or creative work demonstrating commitment to social justice
    - Examples: analytic essay, prose, art, poetry, photography, or other work that conveys your message about social justice issues
    - In your letter, note the relevance of this work to the application

    3. Two Letters of Recommendation
    - From individuals other than relatives
    - From people familiar with your qualifications
    - Can include recommendations from those who know your community work and/or social justice interests and efforts
