Program Grant

Status: Currently NOT accepting applications. Due to the termination of Utah Humanities' NEH Operating Grant, Program Grant applications are not currently being accepted.

Overview: Grants designed to support projects and programs that directly involve the humanities and that engage a community for the purpose of improving it. Utah Humanities supports local communities, grassroots activities, tradition, and innovation.

Geographic Scope: Utah statewide

Eligible Projects:

  • Educational programs

  • Interpretive exhibits and activities

  • Local history projects

  • Oral history projects

  • Media projects

  • Community-centered projects that actively engage the general public or specific audiences (youth, rural, or marginalized groups)
  • What They Fund:

  • Projects directly involving the humanities

  • Community engagement initiatives

  • Public programs and events
  • What They DON'T Fund:

  • Creative process of art, theatre, writing, or media production (discussions accompanying these activities are eligible)
  • Past Funding Impact: Over $250,000 in grants to 107 organizations in 27 cities over three years

    Requirements:

  • All organizations must hold at least one public program

  • Organizations requesting $4,000+ must hold at least three public programs

  • Grant projects involving speakers, lectures, presentations, or panels must dedicate at least 50% of event to active engagement/discussion

  • All grants must be completed within one year of award date

  • Project Directors must attend a half-hour grant orientation Zoom meeting within one month of award

  • Final reports due one month after grant period end

  • For colleges/universities: preference given to applications with community partner; partner must provide letter of intent

  • Grantees must submit one high-quality photo and photo release per funded event

  • Organizations receiving $4,000+ must agree to provide a participant for future grant review committee
  • Awards:

  • Organizations may only receive one Program Grant and one Oral History Grant per year
  • Review Process:

  • Grant Review Committee reviews applications three times per year

  • Committee includes at least one community reviewer and one student reviewer per round

  • No rolling basis applications accepted

  • Organizations should apply at least 3 months prior to project start date

    How to Apply

    Application Process

    When Applications Resume:

    When the program reopens, the application process will include:

    1. Draft Application Phase
    - Submit draft application during appropriate review period
    - Receive feedback from Grant Review Committee (at least one community reviewer and one student reviewer)
    - Revise based on feedback

    2. Final Application Phase
    - Submit final application after receiving draft feedback
    - Organizations requesting $4,000+ must include additional materials
    - For colleges/universities: include letter of intent from community partner

    3. Review and Award
    - Grant Review Committee reviews final applications
    - Award notifications sent to applicants

    4. Post-Award Requirements
    - Submit grant agreement and cash request form within one month of award
    - Enter events into online form at least one month prior to event start
    - Project Directors attend mandatory half-hour grant orientation Zoom meeting within one month of award
    - Submit final reports one month after grant period end date

    Required Materials:

  • Application form (same draft form for all organizations)

  • For $4,000+: additional materials as specified in final application instructions

  • For colleges/universities: letter of intent from community partner

  • High-quality photo and photo release per funded event
  • Timeline Requirements:

  • Grant agreement and cash request form: due within 1 month of award

  • Event entry in online form: at least 1 month before event

  • Final reports: due 1 month after grant period end
  • Planning Requirement:

  • Organizations should plan to apply at least 3 months prior to project start date
  • Note: Reapplication is possible if original application is redesigned to better fit funding priorities, though this is not guaranteed to be awarded.
