PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences

Geographic Scope: Chapel Hill, North Carolina; international applications accepted

Divisions/Focus Areas:

    Minimum Admission Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree (four-year curriculum) or international equivalent from accredited institution with collegiate curriculum in pharmacy, chemistry, biochemistry, biology, zoology, or allied field

  • Advanced professional degrees not requiring bachelor's degree (e.g., PharmD) also accepted

  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 (average grade of B or better)
  • Alternative Entry Option - Biological and Biomedical Sciences Program (BBSP):

  • Allows beginning graduate studies without committing to specific PhD program

  • No commitment to specific program at entry

  • Students select thesis research lab at end of first year

  • Can indicate interest in: Chemical Biology, Drug Discovery, Drug Delivery, Molecular Medicine, Toxicology
  • International Student Requirements:

  • Same application process as U.S. applicants with additional requirements:

  • Sponsor (if applicable) must establish financial responsibility and issue immigration documents

  • If supported by private funds or teaching/research assistantship, certificate of eligibility issued by Graduate School

  • Personal fund applicants must provide verification of available funds

  • Proof of English-language proficiency required (TOEFL minimum 90 internet-based; IELTS minimum 7; Duolingo also accepted)

  • Exceptions: Applicants from English-speaking countries or with U.S./English-medium degree exempt

  • Exam results older than 2 years not accepted

  • Financial certificate required only if offered admission
