Peter Chortek Leadership Award

Background: Established in 2011 by the Chortek Family to honor the late Peter Chortek z"l. Peter was fiercely proud of being Jewish and committed to making a difference, with a focus on Jewish education and ensuring a vibrant Jewish future.

Geographic Scope: San Diego County, California

Award Amount: $5,400 stipend + $540 to establish a Donor Advised Fund at the Jewish Community Foundation + professional video about the project

Focus Areas:

• Jewish communal involvement
• Tikkun Olam (repairing the world)
• Jewish high school student leadership
• Innovative community service projects

Eligibility:

• Currently enrolled in high school
• Organized and led an extraordinary Tikkun Olam project benefiting neighborhood, community, environment, or world
• Demonstrate initiative, passion, and positive spirit
• Inspire others to make a difference and create awareness about issue/cause/project
• Have long-term vision for growth and sustainability
• Involved with project for at least one year before application

Competitive Criteria:

• Dedicated significant time and commitment to creating new project/program OR enhancing existing project OR inspiring large numbers of peers to get involved in service/social justice

Application Process

• Timeline: Applications typically available September, due January
• Submission: Online application through Jewish Community Foundation of San Diego website
• Required Materials:
  • Completed application form
  • Description of Tikkun Olam project
  • Demonstration of initiative, passion, and positive spirit
  • Evidence of one year+ involvement with project
  • Documentation of project's impact and sustainability plan
