About Us Overlook Foundation offers donors the opportunity to change the present and future of health care via their philanthropy. Founded in 1976, Overlook Foundation is a 501(c)(3) charity chosen as a High Performer for 2019 by the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy. The accolade ranks the foundation among the top 25 percent in net fundraising returns for similar philanthropic organizations in the United States and Canada. As a public foundation, we primarily support the nonprofit Overlook Medical Center but also a few local nonprofits with health-related projects that complement the mission of the hospital. In 2020 Healthgrades recognized Overlook Medical Center as one of the top 50 U.S. hospitals, based on its medical outcomes and patient safety. Grants Overlook Foundation supports local nonprofit organizations by awarding grants to fund health-related initiatives. These organizations serve the primary catchment area for Overlook Medical Center, which encompasses Union County and neighboring communities.

Grants to organizations outside of Overlook Medical Center shall be made only for such hospital, health care or other support services as the board of trustees may deem appropriate...to organizations tax exempt...under Section 501(c)(3) serving the health needs of Overlook Medical Center’s catchment area. Funded projects must be consistent with the mission of Overlook Medical Center to build healthier communities. To organizations tax exempt under Section 501 (c)(3) serving the health needs of citizens served by Overlook Medical Center.The general policy of Overlook Foundation is to assist nonprofit organizations with community grants for new health related initiatives that serve individuals who live and work in the primary service area for Overlook Medical Center, including:Union County (all municipalities)Essex County (Maplewood; Millburn/Short Hills; Newark; Irvington; West Orange) Somerset County (Warren; Watchung; Basking Ridge)Middlesex County (Dunellen; Piscataway)Hudson County (Bayonne)Morris County (Chatham; Morristown)Other bordering towns on a case-by-case basis

Ineligibility

Not to make grants for operating expenses or endowments.Not to fund any organization more than once in any twelve-month period.Not to fund any single program for more than three (3) consecutive years.
