Overview

Orphan Rail Crossing Program

The Orphan Rail Crossing Program provides $1 million in grant funding for eligible activities involving: a rail crossing that no longer has a connection to the rail network, a rail crossing serving a closed and vacated facility, and a rail crossing that is used but lacks clear documentation of ownership and responsibility for the crossing’s condition. Eligible activities are any activities necessary to improve the condition of the infrastructure within the right of way of either the railroad or roadway. Projects will be evaluated on the basis of community and railroad concurrence on the need for and selected approach to the project, condition of the roadway surface, and average daily traffic count. For selected projects, the funding recipient must accept long-term maintenance responsibility for the asset after project completion.
