OREF Michael P. Kelly Sr Leadership Fellowship Program Grant

The OREF Michael P. Kelly Sr Leadership Fellowship Program is a one-year virtual fellowship aimed at developing leadership skills in orthopedic residents. The program includes individual coaching, clinical research mentoring, educational opportunities, and an annual leadership retreat. It prioritizes candidates like orthopedic residents (PGY3-PGY5), fellows, and early-career surgeons who show a commitment to orthopedic clinical research and leadership in the orthopedic community.

The Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation (OREF) is a charitable 501(c)(3) organization committed to improving patients’ lives by funding musculoskeletal research that advances clinical practice. Since 1955, OREF has awarded more than 4,700 grants, providing nearly $150 million in support of musculoskeletal research.
As the leading grant-making resource for new investigators, OREF provides important financial support that helps them build a strong foundation for their research careers. Our research grant and education programs are funded entirely through donations and gifts from individuals, musculoskeletal health-focused organizations and foundations, and industry partners.
Program Description
The one-year virtual fellowship is designed to aid and develop leadership skills in the orthopedic resident's research career path. The curriculum focuses on leadership development, including cultivating integrity, selflessness, decisiveness, organization, benevolence, vision, communication, and innovation.
Curriculum Components
Individual Coaching & Mentoring (6 months) - An individual coach is assigned based on the resident's particular needs. Regular meetings are conducted to discuss life management, decision-making, career-building, and other leadership actions.
Clinical Research Coaching & Mentoring (6 months) – An experienced orthopedic clinical researcher will be assigned to guide and mentor the participant in developing and navigating a clinical research career path.
Clinician Scholar educational opportunities, focusing on clinical research career development, may include clinical research grant writing training.
Annual Leadership Retreat – Participants are invited to a half-day-long program administered by a prestigious faculty covering general leadership principles, including an emphasis on resilience and energy management.
Amount: Funds to be dispersed by OREF to coaches, mentors, and for specific identified expense reimbursement.
