Overview

North West REC Scholarship Program

Purpose: Provide scholarships to dependents of North West REC members who are college-bound high school seniors.

Sponsor: North West REC and Basin Electric Power Cooperative

Geographic Scope: Service area of North West REC (Sioux, O'Brien, Plymouth, and Ida counties, Iowa)

Award Structure:

  • $1,250 Scholarships: Two winners from each of four districts (Ida, O'Brien, Plymouth, Sioux) = 8 total awards

  • $500 Scholarships: Several winners randomly drawn in each of four districts

  • $250 Scholarships: All remaining scholarship applicants who don't win higher awards receive $250
  • Award Criteria for $1,250 Scholarships:

  • SAT/ACT scores

  • Overall grade-point average

  • Work experience

  • Participation in school and community activities

  • Personal statement of career goals

  • Written reference or appraisal by a third party
  • $500 and $250 Awards:

  • Applicants not awarded $1,250 scholarships must watch an educational video on North West REC and the cooperative model

  • Complete accompanying questionnaire

  • Random drawing for $500 or $250 scholarships
  • Eligibility Requirements:

  • Must be dependent of a North West REC member

  • Must be a U.S. citizen

  • Must be current member of North West REC

  • Must be a high school senior in NWREC service territory

  • Must be planning to enroll full-time in accredited two-year or four-year college, university, or vocational/technical school

  • Must submit completed application by deadline

    Application Process

    1. Download the scholarship application form from NWREC website

    2. Complete all required application materials:
    - Applicant information
    - Personal statement of career goals
    - Verification of high school senior status
    - Proof of enrollment plans at accredited institution
    - Written reference or appraisal by a third party
    - Academic records (SAT/ACT scores, GPA)
    - Documentation of work experience
    - Documentation of school and community activities

    3. Submit application by deadline:
    - Deadline: Friday, February 13, 2027 (if mailed, must be postmarked by Feb 13)
    - Early submissions encouraged
