Norris-Richards Undergraduate Summer Research Scholarships

Award Type: Undergraduate summer research scholarship

Amount: $3,500 per award

  • $3,000 student stipend for minimum 10 weeks of full-time research

  • $500 for supplies, travel, and other project-related items
  • Geographic Scope: Northeastern Section of the American Chemical Society (NESACS)

  • Entire state of New Hampshire

  • Massachusetts counties: Barnstable, Bristol, Dukes, Essex, Middlesex, Nantucket, Norfolk, Plymouth, and Suffolk
  • Purpose: Established to honor the memories of Professors James Flack Norris and Theodore William Richards by promoting research interactions between undergraduate students and faculty

    Eligibility:

  • Students enrolled in degree-granting program at college or university within NESACS region

  • Chemistry, biochemistry, chemical engineering, or molecular biology majors

  • Must be in good standing

  • Must anticipate completing at least two full years of college-level chemistry before summer research period

  • Only one scholarship per laboratory
  • Institutional Requirements:

  • Institutions expected to contribute toward support of faculty members

  • Student fees for summer research should be waived

  • Academic credit may be granted at institution's discretion
  • Award Requirements:

  • Submit report (~5-7 double-spaced pages including figures, tables, bibliography) to The Nucleus Editor by November 1 for publication

  • Required participation in Northeast Student Chemistry Research Conference (NSCRC) in April following summer
  • Selection Criteria:
    1. Scientific Merit - originality of project, depth of investigation, significance of scientific questions, proposed methods
    2. Feasibility - evidence that project can be completed in available time with available facilities
    3. Preparation - academic record, ability to handle project, background study on research problem
    4. Commitment - depth of commitment from student, department, faculty, and institution to independent research
