Newmark Veterans in Journalism Fellowship Program

  • Military veterans

  • Must be accepted to and attending one of the following master's programs at Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY:

  • - M.A. in Journalism (16-month program)
    - M.A. in Engagement Journalism (16-month program)
    - M.A. in Journalism with bilingual concentration (Spanish and English) (16-month program)

    Newsroom Placement:

  • Placement with newsrooms that are members of the Institute for Nonprofit News (INN) - national network of nonprofit, nonpartisan news organizations
  • Geographic Scope: United States

    Background:
    Partnership created to increase veteran representation in journalism and strengthen media through diverse perspectives. Veterans have historically been underrepresented in journalism despite extensive military service. Program aims to launch veterans into public service journalism careers while strengthening nonprofit newsrooms' ability to cover military and veterans issues.

    Application Process

    1. Be accepted to and enrolled in one of the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism's master's degree programs:
    - M.A. in Journalism
    - M.A. in Engagement Journalism
    - M.A. in Journalism with bilingual concentration
    2. Applications for the fellowship program open Fall 2021
    3. Fellows selected will begin program Fall 2022
    4. Participate in 5-day workshop as part of partnership

    Requirements:

  • Be a military veteran

  • Be accepted to and enrolled in one of CUNY Newmark J-School's master's programs (16-month programs)

  • Maintain enrollment through graduation
