New Mexico Outdoor Recreation Trails+ Grant - Tier 3 (Regional Projects) (NM)

The New Mexico Outdoor Recreation Trails+ Grant aims to enhance local economies and community well-being through the development and improvement of trails and related infrastructure. This grant supports projects that connect people with nature, promote equitable access, and ensure long-term stewardship of New Mexico’s landscapes. With funding between $500,000 to $1,000,000, it requires a 1:1 match for urban projects and 2:1 for rural or Tribal projects, encouraging collaborative efforts for regional benefits.

The New Mexico Outdoor Recreation Trails+ Grant strengthens local economies and outdoor industries while enhancing community well-being. This program funds the planning, development, and improvement of trails and related infrastructure, supporting projects that connect people with nature, promote equitable access, and inspire long-term stewardship of New Mexico’s landscapes. It plays a vital role in maintaining healthy forests, rivers, and watersheds; fueling economic growth; creating jobs; and enriching quality of life for both residents and visitors.
Economic Impact: Project must show demonstrable benefit to the whole region, either by attracting and/or retaining residents or attracting visitors. Projects must demonstrate economic value for the region as a whole. Collaborative multi-partner projects will score highest. Recreation Access: The project must be open for public use.  Projects on Tribal, Pueblo, or Native lands do not have to be open to the public but must be open to Tribal members.
Organizations should have an operating budget five times that of the grant request and have dedicated staff to oversee the project. Project must show demonstrable benefit to the whole region, either by attracting and/or retaining residents or attracting visitors.
