Overview

ML20 Scholarship Program

Overview: College scholarship program providing financial assistance to qualifying student participants from the Maurice Lucas Foundation Academy programs toward their post-high school education.

Background: Launched in February 2017 with a $25,000 donation from Portland philanthropist Howard Hedinger. The program is named the Howard Hedinger Scholarship Program in honor of his support.

Geographic Scope: Portland, Oregon area

Eligibility:

  • Current or former participants in Maurice Lucas Foundation Academy programs

  • Must maintain academic and community involvement requirements

  • Academy participants can receive up to $1,250 per year for up to four years if they meet scholarship requirements

  • First cohort of eligible students graduated high school in 2019
  • Focus Areas:

  • Post-secondary education support

  • Youth development through after-school education and sports programs

  • Underserved Portland area students
  • About the Foundation: Named in honor of Maurice Lucas (1952-2010), the leading scorer on the 1977 NBA champion Portland Trail Blazers. Since formation in 2010, the foundation has served thousands of students and families through Academy programs, basketball camps, and teams.
