Michael P. Malone Award Grant

The Michael P. Malone Award, presented by the Western History Association, recognizes outstanding articles, essays, or commentaries on North American state, provincial, or territorial history published in the previous year. This prestigious award encourages rigorous scholarship and public education on the diverse histories of the North American West, fostering collaboration among historians and promoting the significance of regional studies.

The Western History Association strives to be a congenial home for the study and teaching of all aspects of North American Wests, frontiers, homelands, and borderlands.
Enable collaborations among peoples, institutions, and organizations devoted to the study of western history. Conduct an annual conference at which western history teachers, scholars, and professionals share their research and exchange ideas that facilitate further study of the North American West. Publish an award-winning journal that employs rigorous peer reviews to identify, improve, and distribute original western history scholarship.Promote public education on western history through active involvement with teachers, museums, non profit organizations, libraries, and other venues.

Eligibility

Nominations must be published in the previous calendar year. Journal editors may consult with their editorial boards when making their nominations but are limited to nominating one article per year. If the committee receives a self-nominated article from an author, the Malone Committee Chair will ask the author to request a letter of nomination from the journal in which their work appeared.

Ineligibility

As nominations must come from journal editors, book chapters in anthologies will not be considered.
