Founded in 1908, The National Shellfisheries Association is an international organization of scientists, management officials and members of industry, all concerned with the biology, ecology, production, economics and management of shellfish resources - clams, oysters, mussels, scallops, snails, shrimp, lobsters, crabs, among many other species of importance. Michael Castagna Student Grant for Applied Research The Michael Castagna Student Grant for Applied Research is a competitive grant that is awarded annually to recognize a student's excellence in the area of shellfish research with an emphasis on applied research. It is named in honor of one of the Association's most distinguished past Presidents (1976-7), a recipient of the Wallace Award (1983) and an Honored Life Member (1990). The award is a competitive grant program to which NSA student members can apply for a $1,250 grant for non-travel related expenses associated with undertaking their Master's thesis or Ph.D. dissertation research. Note: Students may apply to all 3 National Shellfisheries Association Student Research grants, but may not submit the same application to each award. The awards support different types of research. Hence, duplicate applications may not be considered for either award.Eligibility

Students who have previously been awarded a Student Research Grant are not eligible to apply for that grant again. Funds are neither intended to allow purchase of general items, such as computers, nor to fund travel expenses associated with attending professional meetings.
