Overview

Mission The Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens shares its world-renowned collections to support scholarship, foster learning, inspire creativity, and offer transformative experiences for diverse audiences. Long-Term Awards The Huntington offers 13 long-term fellowships for nine to 12 months in residence, each with a stipend of $50,000. Although nine of these are open to scholars working on projects in any area where The Huntington’s collections are strong, there are specific awards for maritime history (the Kemble Fellowship), the history of medicine (the Molina Fellowship), and the history of science (the Dibner Fellowship). Three awards (the Thom Fellowships) are reserved for recent postdoctoral scholars. Long-term fellows are expected to be in continuous residence at The Huntington, present at a two-day introductory symposium in September, and participate in weekly working group sessions from October to May. Mellon Fellowship Applicants must be pursuing scholarship in a field appropriate to The Huntington’s collections.

Eligibility

Only those who hold a Ph.D. or who have successfully defended a dissertation by the application deadline are eligible.The majority of Huntington fellowships—short- and long-term—are open to scholars of any nationality.International scholars awarded a short- or long-term fellowship will need to apply for a J-1 visa.Eligible candidates may apply in collaboration with a colleague for either a joint short-term fellowship or a joint long-term fellowship.Candidates are therefore required to choose either a short-term or a long-term award and to convey in their proposal a clear sense of what it is that they hope to achieve within the time available.

Ineligibility

The Huntington will not award two long-term fellowships for work on the same project. You are eligible to compete for another long-term award as soon as you think a new project is sufficiently formulated to be competitive.
