Mea Hoʻomanaʻo Award

Mea Hoʻomanaʻo Award – Aloha Begins with Me

Purpose: Recognition program honoring the values of respect, civility, and aloha in community interactions. The program was initiated by late Kauai Mayor Bryan Baptiste to remind residents of the importance of these values.

Geographic Scope: Kauai, Hawaii

Background: The term "Mea Hoʻomanaʻo" refers to something that causes you to remember. A diverse team of Kauai residents designed the purple logo with the words "Aloha Begins With Me." The concept bridges gaps between generations, residents and newcomers, ethnic groups, and people of different income levels and educational achievements. It is aimed at residents, not visitors, and emphasizes that Kauai's future is our own kuleana (responsibility).

• Demonstrates the true meaning of Aloha in their thoughts, words, and actions
• Inspires others to live the values of Kauai and to act with aloha, kindness, and respect
• Goes "above and beyond" their job responsibilities and acts from a place of caring and selflessness
