MASterworks Awards

Status: Active, awarded annually

Geographic Scope: New York City, US

Description: Established in 2001, the MASterworks Design Awards recognize projects completed in the previous year that exemplify excellence across the municipal arts of architecture, landscape architecture, preservation, and public art. Projects range from iconic buildings to neighborhood gems.

Award Categories:

  • Best New Building — Outstanding architectural design

  • Best Urban Landscape — New or revitalized open space that contributes to livability and resilience

  • Best Restoration — Project that expertly enhances the original qualities of a significant historic building or structure

  • Best Adaptive Reuse — Project demonstrating exceptional creativity in adaptive reuse of an existing building or structure

  • Best New Infrastructure — Distinctive design in public service projects

  • Best New Urban Amenity — Addition to the built environment that contributes to a more livable city

  • Best Environmental Innovation — Exceptional project that enhances the environmental resiliency of the city

  • Best Public Art Restoration (also awarded)

  • Special Recognition (also awarded)
  • Eligibility Requirements:

  • Projects must be located in New York City

  • Projects must have been completed in the previous year

  • Projects can be nominated in up to two categories
  • Notable Past Winners: Weeksville Heritage Center, David Geffen Hall, Adams Street Library, McCarren Pool and Bathhouse, Tenement Museum, Endale Arch, TKTS Booth, Newtown Creek Nature Walk, High Bridge, Gowanus Canal Sponge Park

    Selection: An esteemed jury of architects, designers, preservationists, scholars, and critics convenes annually to select winners

    MASterworks Awards Application Process

    Nomination Process:
    1. Submit nominations during the open call period
    2. Include project details and category designations (up to 2 categories)
    3. Ensure project is located in NYC and completed in the previous year

    Submission Details:

  • Nominations are submitted via open call announcements

  • Previous call windows have been in June with July deadlines

  • Email inquiries to: events@mas.org
  • Required Information:

  • Project name and location

  • Project completion date (must be from previous year)

  • Category selection (up to 2 categories)

  • Project description highlighting contributions to NYC's built environment
