Maryland Senior Ride Program (SRP)

The Maryland Senior Ride Program (SRP) is a state-funded initiative administered by the Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Transit Administration (MDOT MTA) to expand affordable and reliable transportation options for older adults across the state. The program provides grant funding to local nonprofit organizations and county agencies that coordinate volunteer-based and low-cost ride services for seniors who are unable to access or use traditional public transportation. By supporting these community-driven programs, SRP helps older Marylanders maintain their independence, attend medical appointments, shop for groceries, and participate in social and recreational activities that contribute to their quality of life. Funding through the Senior Ride Program is awarded on a competitive basis and is designed to supplement, rather than duplicate, existing transportation services. Eligible applicants include private nonprofit organizations and local government agencies that can demonstrate capacity to manage grant funds responsibly, coordinate with other local service providers, and directly serve the senior population. Applicants must also be able to recruit, train, and manage volunteer drivers or operate cost-efficient service models that expand mobility for seniors in their communities. SRP grants typically support operating expenses such as mileage reimbursement for volunteer drivers, program coordination staff, insurance, and outreach efforts to ensure seniors are aware of available transportation resources. Through this targeted support, the program enhances mobility, reduces isolation, and ensures that Maryland’s aging population has access to safe, dependable, and community-oriented transportation.
