Marilyn Hatza Memorial SHINE Grant

Award Amount: $10,000 per organization

Geographic Scope: Maryland (21 of 23 counties plus Baltimore City)

Eligibility: Nonprofit organizations including museums, historic sites, preservation societies, historical societies, and organizations involved in immigrant services, nature conservation, and cultural awareness

Purpose: General operating expenses including salaries, rent, utilities, supplies, equipment, programs, and other expenses

Program Details:

  • Provides full flexibility to nonprofits to determine where funds are most needed

  • In most recent round (December 2024), awarded $900,000 total to 90 nonprofit organizations

  • 183 applications received from every county in Maryland and Baltimore City

  • A quarter of 2024 grantees received their first-ever grant from Maryland Humanities

  • Program open to organizations that may not traditionally self-identify as humanities organizations but whose work supports humanities
  • Funding Source: State of Maryland via the Maryland Historical Trust
