Overview

MA Repay: MassHealth Behavioral Health Student Loan Repayment Program

Funder: Massachusetts Executive Office of Health and Human Services (EOHHS) and Massachusetts League of Community Health Centers (MLCHC)

Geographic Scope: Massachusetts

Purpose: Support behavioral health professionals serving MassHealth and uninsured patients by offering student loan repayment to improve access to behavioral health services and address critical workforce shortages.

Award Amounts:

  • Up to $300,000 for eligible psychiatrists and nurse practitioners with prescribing privileges

  • Up to $50,000 for Master's and Doctoral degree-level behavioral health professionals

  • Up to $30,000 for bachelor's degree-level behavioral health professionals

    • Eligibility:

  • Psychiatrists, nurse practitioners with prescribing privileges, and other licensed behavioral health clinicians

  • Must commit to four years of full-time service in eligible settings

  • Eligible settings: community-based settings, organizations, or personal practice serving at least 40% MassHealth members and/or uninsured individuals

  • Community health centers serving at least 40% MassHealth and/or uninsured patients are eligible settings

    • Prioritization Criteria (applicants meeting one or more will be prioritized):

  • Applicant can communicate with patients and provide care in a language other than English, and that skill matches the needs of the site

  • Applicant has demonstrated a commitment to providing clinical care to historically underserved patients

  • Applicant resides in an Advancing Health Equity in Massachusetts (AHEM) town

  • Applicant works in an Advancing Health Equity in Massachusetts (AHEM) town

    • Program History: Part of broader MA Repay initiative launched in December 2022. Over $60 million distributed as of November 8, 2024.
