The E.H. Lyon and Melody Lyon Foundation, Inc., was officially incorporated as a tax exempt, private, charitable corporation in October 1972. The main purpose of the Foundation was stated in the Articles of Incorporation as follows: “To aid public religious organizations, charitable organizations, preparatory, vocational and technical schools, institutions of higher learning, and scientific research; to establish, maintain, conduct, assist and endow public charitable, religious, literary, educational, and scientific activities, agencies and institutions, hospitals and other public agencies.” " Lyon Foundation guidelines for giving are about the same as for most private, charitable foundations. Proposals for grants generally need to include: objectives; the program for pursuing objectives; qualifications for persons engaged in work on the objectives; a budget; present means of support and other funding sources; and Internal Revenue Classification.​
