27-0343-07 Local Agency Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Program Non-motorized Safety Program Overview I. INTRODUCTION To help local communities reduce deaths and injuries on Illinois roadways, the Bureau of Safety Programs & Engineering (BSPE) established the non-motorized safety grant program. This program enables local agencies to conduct public information and education campaigns that focus on highway safety issues specific to bicycle and pedestrian safety. This includes- but is not limited to- outreach, ambassador safety programs, students walking or biking to school. Local law enforcement agencies seeking to provide education and outreach may also include enforcement as part of their grant application. II. GOAL The goal of the Non-Motorized Safety Program is to develop and implement effective traffic safety injury prevention and education strategies for pedestrians and bicyclists using Illinois roadways.
