Overview

Leroy F. Aarons Scholarship Award

Partner Organization: National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association (NLGJA)

Administered By: Delaware Valley Legacy Fund

Background: Leroy F. Aarons dedicated his life to journalism and believed that the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) community could advance if the news media did its job by simply telling the truth. This vision became the foundation for the National Lesbian & Gay Journalists Association (NLGJA), which Aarons founded. Recognizing that improving coverage had to start in journalism schools at the nation's colleges and universities, the Leroy F. Aarons Scholarship Award was established in NLGJA's 15th year to honor Aarons' memory and continue the work he began.

Award Purpose: Supports LGBTI journalism students pursuing careers in journalism and media.

Geographic Scope: Greater Philadelphia area and surrounding region (administered through NLGJA)
