Leadership Institute - Center for American Progress

Organization: Center for American Progress

Goal: Increase the participation of progressive people of color among the thinkers, shapers, and planners of policy at every level of government, nonprofit organizations, and groups that influence public policy.

Program Overview

A structured professional development program that exposes members to contacts and networks within the progressive policy world, including grassroots organizations, media, and government.

Duration: October 13, 2016 - May 19, 2017 Meeting Frequency: Monthly sessions held on a monthly basis

    Participant Profile

    Target Candidates:
  • Highly motivated individuals seeking to expand skills, perspectives, and networks to impact progressive social change
  • Early-stage career professionals with less than five years of work experience
  • Individuals showing promise in developing progressive public policies
  • Those with demonstrated interest in filling gaps between traditional public policies and communities of color

Requirements:

  • Minimum: At least three years of experience in policy or public service fields

  • Location Preference: Highly preferable that members live in the Washington, D.C., area or be capable of commuting for monthly meetings

  • Employment: If currently employed, applicants must secure written support from a supervisor affirming participation in program activities

  • Attendance: All chosen participants must be able to attend all Leadership Institute sessions
  • Compensation

    There is no monetary compensation or stipend associated with this institute.

    Required Materials:

    2. Personal statement (no more than 2 pages) including:
    - Reason(s) for applying for membership
    - What you hope to gain from the experience
    - Your background in the policy arena
    - Your goals related to working in the field of policy planning
    3. Resume
    4. Two (2) current recommendation letters:
    - Letters should speak to relevant background and skills
