Overview

Since 1983, the Community Foundation has awarded over $11.9 million in scholarships from 136 funds established by generous individuals, families, businesses and nonprofits to help area students pursue an education and establish rewarding careers. Latin Network for the Visual Arts Scholarship The Daumys, Gaston, born in Havana, Cuba and Mimi, born in Paris, France, both of Latin heritage, combined their love of education and art by creating the Latin Network for the Visual Arts (LNVA). Through this non-profit organization they produced juried, biennial fine art exhibits entitled “Latin Views”. These exhibits showcased, during eleven years, 190 romance language artists from North, South and Central America, the Caribbean, Spain, Portugal, France, Italy and Romania. These artists presented over 600 pieces of fine art and, in collaboration with local educators, the LNVA brought over 3,000 local area students to “Latin Views” and provided them with guided tours in English, French and Spanish. In addition, the LNVA organized multi-lingual special evening tours of “Latin Views” for non-traditional students, mostly adults. Based on this experience, they established the Latin Network for the Visual Arts Scholarship for graduating high school seniors and traditional-aged college undergraduates who are residents of the towns served by the Community Foundation of Eastern CT who are pursuing studies in the visual arts. Secondary preference is for non-traditional students who are pursuing higher education in the visual arts. Scholarship awards are paid to colleges by August 1.
