Background
In January 2024, the Hanger Foundation launched the John Daniel Shay Memorial Scholarship as part of its commitment to enhance the orthotics and prosthetics (O&P) profession. This scholarship honors John Daniel Shay, son of Hanger Clinic Manager Curi Poulin, who passed away on December 13, 2023, at age 20 after a fierce battle with leukemia.John was a dedicated scholar with a passion for mathematics and computer science who excelled throughout his academic career. He led his high school Lego Robotics team to victory, graduated with high honors (earning a STEM scholarship), and was completing a double major in Computer Science and Mathematics at the University of Maine Orono with aspirations to pursue a PhD.
- Award Amount: $5,000 per recipient
- Purpose: Support students pursuing their master's degree in orthotics and prosthetics who share John's passion and dedication to their academic and personal growth

Eligibility Requirements
To be considered for an award, student applicants must meet ALL of the following criteria:- Year in Program: Be enrolled in year two of an accredited O&P Master's degree program
- Residency: Reside within the U.S.
- Leadership: Have proven leadership qualities
- Academic Performance: Maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0
- Mentorship: Interest in a mentor (optional)
- United States only
