Background

In January 2024, the Hanger Foundation launched the John Daniel Shay Memorial Scholarship as part of its commitment to enhance the orthotics and prosthetics (O&P) profession. This scholarship honors John Daniel Shay, son of Hanger Clinic Manager Curi Poulin, who passed away on December 13, 2023, at age 20 after a fierce battle with leukemia.

John was a dedicated scholar with a passion for mathematics and computer science who excelled throughout his academic career. He led his high school Lego Robotics team to victory, graduated with high honors (earning a STEM scholarship), and was completing a double major in Computer Science and Mathematics at the University of Maine Orono with aspirations to pursue a PhD.

Award Amount: $5,000 per recipient
Purpose: Support students pursuing their master's degree in orthotics and prosthetics who share John's passion and dedication to their academic and personal growth
