Joel Smith Leadership Award

Overview: An internal leadership award established in 2018 to honor the memory of Joel Smith, former Director of Operations at the Winthrop Rockefeller Institute, who passed away in 2018.

Background: When Joel Smith passed away in 2018, donations were made to the Institute by his family and friends to establish this leadership award in his honor. The award has since been endowed and is now managed by the University of Arkansas Foundation.

Purpose: Recognizes employees who demonstrate authentic leadership style similar to Joel Smith's approach—genuinely and wholeheartedly cultivating the potential of others by recognizing individual strengths and helping them be the best at their jobs, regardless of position or department.

Eligibility:

  • Institute employees only

  • Award is chosen based on nominations submitted by Institute employees

  • First Award (2019): Chip Porter, Conference Hospitality Manager

  • Second Award (2020): Leo York, Director of Maintenance and Construction

  • Third Award (2021): Jeanice Robinson, Hospitality Supervisor of Front Desk
