Overview

Jewel Lewis Community Scholarship: Supporting Graduating High School Seniors

Overview: The Jewel Lewis Community Scholarship provides financial assistance to graduating high school seniors residing in Chandler or within the CUSD boundaries. This one-year award supports students with a minimum 2.5 GPA who are pursuing a college degree or trade certificate at an accredited Arizona institution, helping them overcome financial barriers to higher education.

History: Chandler Service Club awarded its first academic scholarship in 1958 to a graduating high school senior. In 1971, The Jewel Lewis Community College Scholarship was established and named after member and past president, Jewel Lewis. Since 1958, hundreds of Chandler residents have received financial assistance to obtain their college degrees or trade certificates.

Geographic Scope:

  • Residents of the city of Chandler, OR

  • Students residing within Chandler Unified School District boundaries
  • Eligibility:

  • Must be a graduating high school senior

  • Must be a resident of Chandler or CUSD boundaries

  • Must have minimum 2.5 GPA

  • Must have applied to or be enrolled at accredited public or private community college or university within Arizona

  • Must be full-time student (minimum 12 units or credits per semester)

  • Proof of enrollment required to receive funds prior to each semester

  • Scholarship recipients must maintain minimum 2.5 GPA
  • Award Details:

  • Awarded for one academic year (not automatically renewable, but may re-apply if requirements met)

  • Number of scholarships varies depending on available funds

  • Funds paid directly to school prior to each semester

  • For tuition, books, and academic-related fees
  • Pathway to Additional Support: A Jewel Lewis Scholarship recipient may apply for a Helen Pernell Scholarship for the second and subsequent academic years of college provided all scholarship requirements are met.

  • How to Apply

    Application Requirements

    Submission Method: Documents accepted online, email, or mail. Faxed copies will NOT be accepted.

    Deadline: March 31, 2026 (next deadline is March 31, 2027)

    Application Components:

    1. Typed and Signed Application Form (required)
    - Personal information (name, address, contact info, employment status, etc.)
    - Academic information (high school, graduation date, planned school for 2026-27, academic level, major, credit hours planned, anticipated graduation date, cumulative GPA, intended career)
    - Financial information (income sources, expenses, scholarships, grants, FAFSA status, family contribution)

    2. Essay (required)
    - Maximum 1,000 words
    - Must describe: personal background, educational goals, career goals, and financial circumstances affecting ability to afford education
    - Must explain how scholarship will assist in achieving goals
    - Essays exceeding 1,000 words will be disqualified

    3. High School Transcript (required)

    4. Letter of Recommendation (required)
    - One (1) letter from non-relative
    - Two must be from high school teacher, guidance counselor, principal, or coach

    5. Signed Affidavit (required)
    - Certifying all information is true and correct
    - Authorizing disclosure to third parties for scholarship consideration
    - Authorizing release of information for publicity purposes
    - Agreement to notify Chandler Service Club of changes affecting eligibility (dropped classes, class withdrawal, school withdrawal, change in full-time status, excess funds from other sources)

    Important Notes:

  • All documents must be completed and submitted by deadline

  • Late or incomplete applications will not be considered

  • Scholarship recipients notified in May

  • Proof of enrollment required prior to receiving funds each semester
