Jersey New Moves! Fellowship Program

Focus Areas: Dance and choreography

Program Overview: The Jersey (New) Moves Fellowship Program is awarded to choreographers whose work demonstrates extraordinary promise in the area of dance. The program seeks to provide new and unique opportunities for fellows to develop in both the creative and professional realms. It is offered in association with Dance New Jersey.

Program Structure:

  • Two-year fellowship spanning two seasons

  • First year: Fellows present an example of existing work

  • Second year: Fellows premiere a completed new work fully developed under the fellowship

  • Fellows are paired with a mentor/choreographer who provides active guidance

  • Annual performances held at the culmination of each fellowship year
  • Award: Annual honorarium of $1,000 per choreographer to help artists set aside periods of time for experimentation and development

  • Annual performance opportunities on NJPAC's Lizzie & Jonathan Tisch Stage at Victoria Theater

  • Tech rehearsal support

  • Rehearsal space in Newark (20-40 hours)

  • Access to tickets for dance performances at NJPAC

  • Videographer for performances

  • Photographer for rehearsals and performances

  • Online social media package and website portal

  • Press kit

  • Fundraising support

  • Access to audience contact information

  • Networking opportunities with mentors, former participants and industry VIPs

  • Professional development workshops covering: elevator pitch, social media and marketing, fundraising, grant writing, arts education curriculum, legal and union issues, contracts and negotiations, booking, technical design, and broadcast
  • Arts Education Component: Fellows are expected to serve as mentors and teaching artists as part of NJPAC's Arts Education offerings. Full and active participation in the NJPAC community is expected.

    Eligibility Criteria:

  • Newly-established choreographers

  • 18 years and older

  • Work has never been produced in a full- or half-evening concert as part of a performing arts center season

  • Must be New Jersey based company/artist with proof of residency

  • Must be a current member of Dance New Jersey

  • Can be an individual choreographer or new company choreographer

  • A diversity of styles is encouraged

  • Technical needs: Lighting and Sound will use NJPAC repertory plot; only minimal technical needs available

    Application Process

    Submission Requirements:

    1. Artistic Statement:
    - Clear artistic statement no longer than 400 words
    - Address: What do you hope to accomplish in your work? What drives you? How would this opportunity help in your career?

    2. Video Submissions:
    - Up to two sample videos of 5-10 minutes each
    - Submit via YouTube or Vimeo links
    - Videos should be examples of work you have done in the past and/or working on now

    3. Required Materials:
