International Parliamentary Scholarship (IPS)

Status: Active, ongoing program founded in 1986

Geographic Scope: International program; open to applicants from around 50 countries including the United States

Focus Areas: Political education, parliamentary studies, democratic values, and civic engagement

What They Fund:

€700 per month stipend

Free accommodation

Insurance and travel expenses

Three-month placement with a Member of the Bundestag

Trainings, seminars, and university courses

Five-month total program duration in Berlin

Program Duration: March 1 - July 31 each year

Eligibility Requirements:

U.S. citizenship

College degree

Very good (B2+) knowledge of German language

Familiarity with German politics, society, and history

Under age 30 at start of scholarship

Funder: German Bundestag, in cooperation with Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität Berlin, and Technische Universität Berlin

Program Components:

Three-month placement with a Member of the Bundestag

Practical knowledge of parliamentary work

Multifaceted program of trainings, seminars, and university courses

Opportunity for highly qualified young people to experience German parliamentary system and political decision-making processes

Selection Process: Pre-selection process followed by interviews held in the United States with German Bundestag's independent panel
