Scholarships Grand Haven Area Community Foundation scholarships are awarded competitively based on criteria set by donors. The Community Foundation has a rigorous internal selection process for each scholarship decision, and each applicant is reviewed in depth, and considered thoroughly. Our scholarship program is simple. You are able to apply once for all foundation scholarships you may be eligible for. Once your application is submitted, you will be eligible for all those for which you meet the requirement. Hofma Scholarship Fund Edward and Elizabeth Hofma dedicated their lives to helping others. In 1884, Dr. Edward Hofma started a medical practice in Spring Lake. Elizabeth Pruin was a schoolteacher. After marrying Edward, Elizabeth went to medical school and became the area's irst woman doctor in 1891. The Hofmas shared a keen interest in the world around them. Edward joined the early expeditions searching for the North Pole and she worked to build a Carnegie library in the Tri-Cities. They loved gardening and the nature. Hofma Park is the result of their early environmental efforts. The Hofima Trust Fund was established by Doctors Edward and Elizabeth Hofma in 1936. The Hofma Trust became a part of the Grand Haven Area Community Foundation in 1984. A portion of the Hofima Trust Fund is used each year for scholarships to deserving local students.
