Gus Poesch Research Fund

Overview: The Gus Poesch Research Fund was established in honor of Gus Poesch, a true innovator, stimulator of research, influential educator, and respected businessman. Approximately $40,000 is available annually for recruitment, research, teaching, and floriculture projects at The Ohio State University.

Focus Areas:
1. Recruitment of high-quality floriculture graduate students to Ohio State University
2. Floriculture graduate student research at Ohio State University
3. Floriculture graduate student travel to present research papers as representative of Ohio State (max $1,500 per proposal; must include abstract copy)
4. Start-up costs for research, teaching, and extension of young floriculture faculty at Ohio State
5. Educational travel (domestic and international) of young floriculture faculty at Ohio State
6. Floriculture research projects (funded after considering qualified requests in categories 1-5)

Research Priorities:

  • Increasing shelf life/garden performance

  • Economical means for recycling greenhouse waste

  • Water quality/alkalinity control

  • Evaluation/development of biocontrol methods and management techniques

  • Improving production techniques

  • Plug production techniques

  • Perennial production techniques

  • Production techniques to conserve water and protect groundwater

  • Control of pest problems (thrips, aphids, whitefly, fungus gnats)

  • Control of disease problems (TSWV, botrytis, mildew, pythium)

    Application Process

    1. Submission Method: Electronic submission of research proposals

    2. Deadline: August 1 of each year

    3. Required Materials:
    - Completed Proposal Application Form
    - Gus Poesch Student Travel Grant Application Form (if applicable)
    - Detailed explanation of proposal/research project (not to exceed 10 pages in length)

    4. Student Travel Requirements (if applicable):
    - Proposal must not exceed $1,500
    - Must include copy of abstract being presented

    5. Grant Administration:
    - Grant duration: One year
    - Renewal requests can be submitted annually
    - All grant recipients are required to electronically submit progress reports twice yearly (August 1 and December 1) for AFE Board review at July and January meetings
    - Final reports are published and sent to donors and those who request information
