This initiative encourages artistic development and innovative thinking in art. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, at least 21 years old, and not previous recipients of direct grants from Harpo. The foundation emphasizes the quality of the artist's work and its potential to expand aesthetic inquiry, making it a vital resource for emerging talents.

Overview

The Harpo Foundation was established in 2006 to support artists who are under recognized by the field. The foundation seeks to stimulate creative inquiry to encourage new modes of thinking about art. We view the definitions of art and artist to be open-ended and expansive. The Foundation’s grant program awards 7-10 grants annually. Grants are made directly to artists to support their development through the program 'Grants for Visual Artists.' Applications are evaluated on the basis of the quality of the artist’s work, the potential to expand aesthetic inquiry, and its relationship to the foundation’s priority to provide support to visual artists who are under-recognized by the field.
