Mission: Support up-and-coming equine researchers studying key diseases and disorders affecting equine health.

Eligibility

• Required: AAEP (American Association of Equine Practitioners) member
• Target audience: Graduate students, fellows, and residents

Focus Areas

Pressing research topics and areas of special interest include:
• Musculoskeletal disease
• Gastrointestinal disease
• Metabolic disease
• Laminitis
• Factors to improve racing safety
• Development of new technologies (e.g., stall-side tests)
• Note: Research applications on any topic will be considered for funding

Project Types

• Pilot studies or preliminary studies that are part of a major study or will lead to a major project are of particular interest
• Small stand-alone projects will also be considered

Impact

Since inception in 2019, The Foundation has awarded $194,681 in support of exceptional science conducted by 10 up-and-coming equine researchers.

The Foundation for the Horse is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization established in 1994 as the AAEP Foundation, serving as the charitable arm of the American Association of Equine Practitioners. It is dedicated to improving the welfare of horses through Education, Research, and Benevolence. The Foundation awards over $700,000 annually in scholarships and grants to impact equine health and well-being throughout the U.S. and developing countries.
