Goddard/PEN North American Centers Scholarship

Status: Active partnership program established fall 2017

Award Amount: $10,000 annual scholarship

Description: A partnership between Goddard College and PEN America, PEN Canada, PEN Mexico, and PEN Center USA to support creative writers committed to freedom of expression.

Geographic Scope: North America (US, Canada, Mexico)

Eligible Programs:

  • Goddard College's low-residency MFA in Creative Writing Program

  • BFA in Creative Writing Program (for applicants without bachelor's degree)
  • Additional Awards for PEN Members:

  • MFA Goddard Engaged Artist Award: $2,000 one-time award for MFA applicants not receiving the scholarship

  • BFA Goddard Engaged Artist Award: $1,000 one-time award for all admitted BFA applicants
  • Eligibility:

  • Must be member in good standing of PEN America, PEN Canada, PEN Mexico, or PEN Center USA

  • For MFA: Standard admission requirements apply

  • For BFA: May not hold bachelor's degree; must otherwise meet admission criteria
  • Award Distribution: $10,000 dispersed in two payments over first two consecutive terms of enrollment

    Application Process

    1. Apply directly to Goddard College's low-residency MFA or BFA in Creative Writing Program
    2. Indicate PEN membership status and membership organization
    3. Complete standard college application requirements
    4. Review scholarship-specific requirements on Goddard College website

    Eligibility Requirements

    • Current membership in good standing with PEN America, PEN Canada, PEN Mexico, or PEN Center USA
    • For MFA: Bachelor's degree and standard MFA admission criteria
    • For BFA: No bachelor's degree required; otherwise meet BFA admission standards
