Founded by the College of Arts & Letters in 1984 as the Institute for Scholarship in the Liberal Arts and renamed in 2025, the Franco Family Institute for Liberal Arts and the Public Good helps advance research in the arts, humanities, and social sciences. To accomplish this goal, the institute provides faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate students in the College with three main types of support. Internal fundingProposal developmentConference support Global Micro-Residencies Purpose In line with the goal to “advance the College as an international leader in scholarship,” the Franco Family Institute will sponsor scholarly micro-residencies abroad for tenure-line faculty in the College of Arts & Letters. With this residency program, the Institute aims to foster international collaboration, expand the reach of liberal arts scholarship, and support global networking opportunities for liberal arts scholars. Grants of up to $7,000 will support one-to-two-week stays for Arts & Letters faculty at institutions outside the 50 United States, with an additional $3,000 available to support a graduate student research assistant or a visit to Notre Dame for a scholar from the host institution. Applicants are responsible for finding their own host institution and arranging the logistics of their residency. Faculty are encouraged to select any highly prestigious host institution that will enhance their scholarship and advance their professional goals.Eligibility

The Franco Global Micro-Residencies program is open to all tenure-line faculty with a primary appointment in the College of Arts & Letters. This program requires a formal letter of invitation from an institution outside the 50 United States. Residencies at institutions in U.S. territories are eligible for support. Priority will be given to residencies at colleges and universities. Residencies at museums, libraries, institutes, or archives will also be considered. Residencies should include various forms of scholarly exchange, including but not limited to meetings with potential collaborators, guest lectures, and colloquia. The program emphasizes mutually beneficial collaboration. While awardees may conduct research during their residency, this program does not fund travel taken primarily for the purpose of data collection or archival research. Supported residencies must take place before February 1, 2027. Faculty are limited to one Franco Global Micro-Residencies grant every three years. Allowable costs: Franco Global Micro-Residencies grants may be used to support travel, housing, and research expenses. Total residency expenses may exceed the $7,000 cap provided that the applicant identifies additional sources of funding and lists those sources and amounts in their budget.Faculty may apply for up to an additional $3,000 to support…travel to Notre Dame for a scholar from the host institution. These funds may be used for travel and expenses related to the visiting scholar’s activities on campus (catering, space rental, event support, publicity, etc.). ORtravel and research expenses (including wages for research assistance) for one graduate student currently enrolled in an Arts & Letters graduate program who will participate in the residency.Ineligibility
